Media Culture Program

1. The Idea in Curriculum Design

The Media Culture Program focuses on cultural meaning and social influences of the communication media. It aims to equip students with the ability to thoughtfully observe and analyze communication culture and the media industry. The training will help students become professionals in creative industries with social concern and cultural knowledge. We consider that in a contemporary society, the media are significant in two ways: providing important symbolic resources of culture and representation, and serving as an important sector for production and consumption in the economic system. Therefore, we designed two modules for this program:

(1) Media Culture and Criticism: this module considers media as culture and examines cultural meaning of media content and how common people interact with the media. Particularly, it focuses on digital media and visual text

(2) Media Industry and Society: this module emphasizes economical and political aspects of the media industry, including its economic logic, global-local relations, and media policies and institutions. Particularly, it focuses on the trend towards media digitalization.

2. The Media Culture Program is designed by the Department of Communication and Technology. All Students of NCTU are welcome to take the program and will be awarded a certificate after completing 18 credits.
